Ivalene Robbins, 90, of Dyersville, and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Monday, May 19, 2014, at her home in Dyersville. She was born January 2, 1924, in Keokuk County the daughter of Oliver and Bertha Small Mason.
Ivalene was a forward on the Barnes City High School basketball team, and graduated from Barnes City High School with the class of 1941. Following graduation she worked in the kitchen at the old Holt Drug Store in Oskaloosa, and later worked in the dental office of Dr. James Wray in Oskaloosa.
On October 9, 1947, she was united in marriage to David Robbins in Iowa City. Shortly after they were married, Ivalene and Dave bought the old Playmor Bowling Lanes in Oskaloosa. Together they owned and operated the bowling alley, where she was a great bowling teacher and bowler. After a fire destroyed the bowling alley they moved to Des Moines. Ivalene worked for the State of Iowa Vehicle Department for many years, retiring from there in 1985.
In 1987, they moved to Dyersville to be near their grandchildren. In 1993, Dave and Ivalene moved to Oskaloosa, and in 2013 moved back to Dyersville.
She enjoyed knitting and crocheting, and made many dish cloths, baby blankets, and Afghans. Much of her crochet work is still being used by family and friends. She enjoyed watching sports on television especially Iowa Hawkeye basketball. Ivalene also enjoyed playing four point pitch with friends and Wahoo with her grandchildren. She looked forward to nice weather, so she and Dave could sit outside and enjoy evenings visiting with their neighbors. She delighted in spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Ivalene was a member of the Barnes City American Legion Auxiliary.
The family would like to thank Dr. Hendrik Schultz from Mercy Hospital in Dubuque, and Hospice of Dubuque, especially Amy M. and Heather for their loving care of Ivalene.
Her family includes her husband of over 66 years, David Robbins of Dyersville; two daughters: Linda Robbins of Epworth, and Christy (Richard) Nieman of Earlville; four grandchildren: Heather (Damian) Arensdorf, Mark (Olga) Nieman, Kyle Nieman, Tim Nieman; two great grandchildren: Tyler Arensdorf and Kaylie Arensdorf; her brother, Earnest Mason of Oskaloosa; a sister, Nancy (Larry) Doonan of Barnes City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, five brothers: Oren Mason, Norman Mason, William Mason, Walter Mason and Paul Mason; five sisters: Ina Cox, Mae Ruby, Wanda Robertson, Wilma Sanders and Edith Kinney; three half-sisters: Allene Morris, Gail McGrew and Helen Garman.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, May 27, 2014, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Pastor Nathan Frambach officiating.
Burial will be in the Barnes City Cemetery in Barnes City. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin and the family will be present Monday, May 26, 2014, from 4-6 p.m.
