Irvin "Dutch" Den Adel

Irvin “Dutch” Den Adel, 85, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, February 14, 2012, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa. He was born February 21, 1926, near Pella, Iowa, the son of Walter Edwin and Grace Zylstra Den Adel. Early on he went to work at a service station and sold newspapers. In April of 1944, he entered the United States Navy, and was honorably discharged in April of 1946. He returned to Oskaloosa and went to work at the Oskaloosa Produce Company. On February 1, 1947, he was united in marriage to Elsie DeYoung in Oskaloosa. Dutch worked for Quality Oil then Messer Oil in Oskaloosa until he retired in 1990. In retirement he enjoyed spending time with Elsie, he delighted in the many many miles they walked together. As Elsie’s health began to fail, Dutch was a devoted caretaker to her every need and, because of his devotion to her she was able to stay in their home until she passed on February 7, 2002. He enjoyed being social and visiting with people as he made his ’rounds’ about Oskaloosa.

His family includes his son: Ron (& Betsy Valbracht) Den Adel of Glen Ellyn, Illinois; his granddaughter: Emily (& Jesse) Den Adel Emery of San Francisco, California; and his close friend June Sarver of Oskaloosa.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his two sisters: Jeanetta Dahm and Charlotta Bowen

Funeral services will be held Friday, February 17, 2012, at 1p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Thursday after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 6-8 Thursday evening to greet friends and relatives. Memorials may be made to Mahaska Hospice.
