“IOWA’S FIREFIGHTING FAMILY” DOCUMENTARY TO BROADCAST ON IOWA PUBLIC TELEVISION
Oskaloosa – Iowa, May 30, 2012 – The Communication Research Institute of William Penn University, presents, in association with statewide Iowa Public Television, a documentary on volunteer firefighters of Iowa in “Iowa’s Firefighting Family”.
The trust and cooperation that is required to risk one’s life to help others make the 20,000 firefighters in the state of Iowa (90% of whom are volunteers) one giant family.
This special bond is illustrated in “Iowa’s Firefighting Family” with the Butler family of Harlan, Iowa. Patriarch Tom Butler has been fighting fires for more than twenty years and has since inspired his three sons, a daughter, and two in-‐laws to follow his lead. The family talks about working together to help its community, the ups-‐and-‐downs its experienced along the way, and being a small branch of a much larger family tree.
The piece highlights other firefighters from across the state and takes you to ‘family gatherings’ like the annual state firefighters convention in Monticello and a Firefighter Memorial ceremony in Coralville.
The documentary features firefighters from throughout Iowa, including Welton, Stacyville, Strawberry Point, Leon, Van Horne, Monticello, Center Point, Oyens, Earlham, Dexter, Adair, and Hopkinton.
The 27-‐minute documentary airs statewide on Iowa Public Television at the following times:
- Tuesday, June 5, 7:00 PM
- Tuesday, June 12, 8:30 PM
- Sunday, June 24, 4:30 PM
