Iowa Conference laurels for Central’s Wood, Daniels
PELLA — Central College baseball player Tanner Wood (junior, Pella) and men’s track and field athlete Will Daniels (sophomore, Geneseo, Ill.) were named Iowa Conference Performers of the Week in their respective sports Monday.
The position player of the week, Wood owned a slugging percentage of .968 as the Dutch went 4-0 on the diamond last week. Wood had three home runs and eight RBIs, while adding three stolen bases. In a 13-3 win over Simpson College on Saturday, Wood went 4-for-4 at the plate and scored twice while driving in three runs.
Wood and the Central baseball squad are at Nebraska Wesleyan University on Tuesday afternoon for a doubleheader. A weekend series in Waverly against Wartburg College awaits on Friday and Saturday.
Competing primarily against Division I and II competition at the Kansas Relays last Wednesday and Thursday, Daniels finished second of 14 competitors with 6,673 points. He recorded new personal-bests in eight of the 10 events. With a leap of 6 feet, 8.75 inches, Daniels won the high jump.
Daniels will compete Friday afternoon in the open high jump of the Drake Relays. Central will be competing at the Drake Relays Thursday through Saturday. The program will also be sending athletes to the Kip Janvrin Open in Indianola on Thursday and Friday.
