First Week on the Hill

Hello Friends,

This week has marked the beginning of the 88th General Assembly of the Iowa Legislature and was followed by the pomp and circumstance that comes with it. Throughout the week we have heard Governor Kim Reynolds, Chief Justice Mark Cady, and Adjutant General Timothy Orr speak before both the House and Senate on policy areas that will serve as focus points for the session ahead.

During the Condition of the State address, Governor Reynolds outlined several programs aimed at creating, expanding, and preparing for future opportunities. One of her top priorities remains to be the development of Iowa’s youth, both in health and job preparedness. Governor proposed an increase in investment in physical and mental health programs for children as well as for programs providing assistance for workforce development.

While developing the workforce, the Governor has also looked to Iowa infrastructure as a central point in growing the Iowa economy. The Governor has requested that the state government works to invest in physical infrastructure to improve the transit of commerce while also expanding broadband into open digital commerce with rural Iowa. Central to the Governor’s proposals is the increased yet targeted investment of state funds in proven programs to ensure the continued growth of Iowa.

On Wednesday, Chief Justice Cady spoke about the need to utilize technology to improve the efficiency of Iowa’s justice system. The Chief Justice identified two areas in need of improvement: small claims dispute resolution and court resources. Using technology, small claims disputes can be resolved online and provide valuable opportunities for the judicial system to become ever more efficient.

Finally, Adjutant General Timothy Orr reported on the condition of the Iowa National Guard. The General’s report speaks volumes of the honorable men and women who serving in Iowa. Rest assured, the Iowa National Guard is prepared for whatever challenge may arise, whether it’s on the battlefield or national emergency. The Iowa Guard has and always will be a valuable asset to our state and is ready for what obstacle they might face.

After hearing each of these speakers, I’ve gotten more excited than ever about all the possibilities in store for this session. Each speaker has reaffirmed that we have some great leadership here in Iowa and that we are on the right track. I know that each one of them cares as much about Southern Iowa as I do and I am encouraged that we are ready to do some great work. I am truly honored to represent you and your values here in Des Moines.
