Helen Hoskins, 101, passed away Thursday, June 15, 2023, at Oskaloosa Care Center. She was born on January 24, 1922, the daughter of Audrey C. and Unice Ellen (Brackin) McIntosh.
Helen graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1939.
On June 5, 1943, Helen was united in marriage to Joseph C. Hoskins I.
They began farming in Wapello County. They moved back to the Fremont farming area in 1945 where she stayed home caring for their children. Helen pursued her nursing career, receiving her degree from Indian Hill’s in 1961. She worked as a nurse at Ottumwa Regional for over 28 years until her retirement.
Helen attended College Avenue Friends Church, serving in many capacities, and looked forward to Sunday lunch with her family. She spent her time quilting, making ceramic art pieces, and taking care of her husband, Joe, during the busy farm season.
Her family includes her daughter, Marilyn Hoskins Thompson; son, Joseph C. Hoskins II; granddaughter, Gena (& Terry) Hopkins; four great- grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. Marge Spencer and Margaret Hoskins Good were special nieces to her.
She was preceded in death by her husband Joseph; son-in-law, Gary Thompson; grandson, Chad Thompson; sister, Marie; and two brothers, Audrey Jr. and Delmar.
A graveside service and burial will take place Tuesday, June 20, 2023, at 11:00 am at Cedar Township Memorial Cemetery with Rich Raines officiating. Those planning on attending the graveside service should plan to meet at the cemetery. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be made to Oskaloosa Care Activities.
