Gritsch, Remick tabbed for football Academic All-America squad
PELLA — For the first time since 1988, two Central College Football players were chosen for the Academic All-America Division III football team as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Tuesday.
Seniors H-back Kyle Gritsch (Brooklyn, Iowa BGM HS) and linebacker Carson Remick (Hillsboro, Mount Pleasant HS) were both named to the second team as a tight end and a special teamer, respectively. Both exercise science majors, Gritsch has a 3.44 GPA and Remick has a 3.73 GPA.
To be eligible for Academic All-America consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity contributor, maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.30 or better and have reached sophomore standing. CoSIDA members first submit ballots for a district team before selected nominees advance for consideration on the national squad.
An all-Iowa Conference first team selection in 2017, Gritsch was second on the team in all three major receiving categories. He finished with 576 yards on 39 catches while scoring four touchdowns. The three-year starter needed just one carry in the season finale against Dubuque to score his only rushing touchdown of the season, diving for a one-yard score. In that game against the Spartans, he had nine grabs for 115 yards and a 31-yard touchdown catch, earning a spot on the D3football.com team of the week.
Remick, the team’s long snapper on punts as well as a key coverage man on kick teams, was slotted as a special teams player. Also a reserve linebacker, Remick racked up 34 total tackles with 2.5 for loss and 1.5 sacks. He was credited with five tackles during special team plays.
Central student-athletes have earned academic All-America honors 56 times, including 15 times by a member of the football program. The last Central football player to be recognized was tight end Mitchell Boerm in 2016. Central also had multiple football Academic All-Americans in 1979 and 1985.
