Grinnell Falls to Beloit in a Defensive Battle, 16-7
GRINNELL, IA — On Saturday, September 21st, the Grinnell Pioneers came up short in their home football matchup against the Beloit Buccaneers, losing 16-7 at Rosenbloom Field. Despite taking an early lead, Grinnell’s offense was stifled by Beloit’s defense, which held the Pioneers scoreless after the first quarter.
Grinnell (0-3, 0-2) opened the scoring in the first quarter when quarterback Henry Baird connected with Nick Rhinehart on a 7-yard touchdown pass. Rhinehart also added the extra point, putting the Pioneers ahead 7-0. However, Beloit (1-2, 1-1) answered back with a 9-yard touchdown pass from Jacob Shafer to Tommy Dixson in the final seconds of the first quarter to tie the game at 7-7.
Beloit gained the upper hand in the second quarter with a safety and an 18-yard touchdown pass from Shafer to Chris Moore. The Buccaneers’ defense, led by Mitch Douglas, who recorded 10 tackles and 2.0 tackles for loss, kept the Grinnell offense in check throughout the remainder of the game.
Key Plays and Turning Points
