Greetings from Under the Golden Dome

Iowa State Senator Tim Kapucian

Iowa State Senator Tim Kapucian

This was funnel week. No floor action took place in the Senate. The flurry of action was at the sub-committee and committee levels. Legislators and staff were working hard to funnel-proof legislation to make it eligible for floor debate, thus avoiding the label, “It’s Dead.” In order to be considered funnel-proof a bill must survive the first funnel by being passed through the committee level in either the House or the Senate.

Next week we expect to get to work debating on the Senate floor. Our next funnel deadline is in a couple of weeks and we will continue to narrow the field of eligible bills to be considered.

For a full list of the eligible bills currently in the Senate, you can go to www.legis.iowa.gov. There you can look up the Senate Calendar.

We continue striving for education reform, property tax reform, and mental health reform while also working hard to reach an agreement on supplemental state aid for our schools, formerly known as allowable growth. This is very frustrating as a member of the minority party, where we do not control the agenda. Despite these challenges, we will continue to march forward.

See you out and about the district.
