Golf Tournament Raises Funds And Awareness For Victims

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The serene surroundings at Edmundson Golf Course played host to the Crisis Intervention Services 15th Annual Charity Golf Tournament.

Crisis Intervention Services provides support and shelter for victims of sexual assault and domestic violence. They provide support to victims in 12 Iowa counties;Appanoose, Davis, Jasper, Jefferson, Keokuk, Lucas, Mahaska, Marion, Monroe, Poweshiek, Wapello and Wayne counties.

Saturday’s golf tournament not only helped to raise much needed funds to help fill in gaps that occur in categorical funding, but according to Nancy Robertson, Executive Director of Crisis Intervention Services, it also helps those people who are impacted by sexual assault and domestic violence know that the community does care about them.

“The need is always greater than what the funding is,” added Robertson.

Those funds may be helpful in helping to provide deposit money, which could allow a person impacted by sexual assault or domestic violence to move into a place of their own versus the shelter. This can prove to be more cost effective in the end in some situations.

Birth certificates are another large expense for CIS. When victims are escaping situations, many times they aren’t thinking about bringing along birth certificates. Those certificates are needed when applying for some assistance programs, like Section 8 Housing. “It’s not something they often think about, often they are fleeing in the middle of the night,” added Robertson.

Robertson said they serve women and men clients. Men make up to 25% of “all victims that we serve”.

Roberston wanted to convey how much CIS is grateful for the support of the community. “I never cease to be overwhelmed by the generosity here,” Robertson said in closing.
