Gladys Evelyn Bloem, 94, of Oskaloosa died Saturday, June 8, 2013 at Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehab in Oskaloosa.

Gladys was born Wednesday, June 4, 1919 in Marion County, Iowa, the daughter of Dirk G. and Hattie Jansen DeJong. She graduated from the Rock Island School in Mahaska County. On February 28, 1940, Gladys was united in marriage to Elmer John Bloem in New Sharon, Iowa. Together, they farmed all of their married lives in the Oskaloosa area until Elmer’s death on April 29, 2000. She made her profession of faith at the First Christian Reformed Church in Pella. She was a faithful member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa, had served as a librarian, a Sunday School teacher and was a member of the Ladies’ Bible Hour. In addition, she also taught Sunday School at the Good News Chapel and served as a Willing Worker for the Oskaloosa Christian School.

Her family includes her two sons: Dewayne (& Diane) Bloem of Eden Prairie, Minnesota and Marvin (& Kim) Bloem of Oskaloosa; a daughter: Katherine (& Keith) Roozeboom of Pella; 12 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and a twin sister: Evelyn Van Heukelom of Oskaloosa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a granddaughter in infancy: Sandra Bloem; two brothers: James DeJong and Henry DeJong; a sister-in-law: Anna DeJong; and a brother-in-law: Ernest Van Heukelom.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday, June 12, 2013 at 10 A.M. in the First Christian Reformed Church with Reverend Dale Visser officiating.
A family prayer service will be held in the fellowship hall of the church at 9:45 A.M.
Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery near Leighton.
Visitation will begin Tuesday after 1 P.M. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be present at the funeral chapel Tuesday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the First Christian Reformed Church or Oskaloosa Christian School.
