Oskaloosa, Iowa – Underneath the famous Rivola marquee, inside of Smokey Row Coffee in downtown Oskaloosa, students got their opportunity to shine.

Allison McGuire, vocal instructor with George Daily Auditorium said the studio cabaret celebrating the achievements of those students.

“George Daily offers music lessons, voice and piano lessons, throughout the school year, but we’ve never had them as a youth theatre camp before. And so this was a chance for people to sign up for about six weeks of private lessons, just as an introduction to voice and piano and to see what private music lessons are like, at a reduced cost; and so we are showing the culmination of all that work tonight,” explained McGuire.

Those performing came from a large cross-section of students. Some as young as the second grade all the way to high school age and adults who participated.

“It was really just kind of starting off with some basic music literacy, breathing technique for singers. The piano students learned a little bit of the 12-bar blues to be able to start improvising and creating their own songs right off the bat”, McGuire said of the program.

The program is something that George Daily would like to do on an annual basis, McGuire explained.

“We’re not quite sure how often it’ll be offered, but we really like being able to for people whose schedules are too busy to commit to yearly lessons or just want to give it a try and see what it’s like.”
