Gentry Reaches Double Digits in Saves in Loss to Avila
Kansas City, Mo.–The defense did not bend far, but the offense could not make up for a pair of second-half goals as the William Penn women’s soccer team fell 2-0 to Avila in non-conference play Sunday.
The Statesmen (0-4) were outshot 12-3 by halftime, but refused to let an attempt into the netting as the contest was scoreless at the break.
The Eagles (3-0), who held a 9-1 edge in shots in the second half (21-4 overall), eventually broke through against goalkeeper Laura Gentry (Sr., Fruitland, Idaho, Physical Education) at the 60:04 mark. They then added another goal in the 71st minute to wrap up the scoring.
Gentry finished with ten saves on the afternoon, while Haley Wark (Fr., Surrey, B.C., Communications) paced the offense with two shots.
Next: William Penn will play its home opener Friday by hosting Friends at 5 p.m. as part of the William Penn Classic.
