Foresters Strike Early, Hold Off Grinnell 2–0

LAKE FOREST, Ill. — The Grinnell College men’s soccer team could not overcome an early deficit on Saturday afternoon, falling 2–0 to Lake Forest College at Farwell Field.

Lake Forest, now 16–1 overall and 7–0 in the Midwest Conference, used two first-half goals and a sturdy back line to remain perfect in league play. The Foresters struck in the 25th minute when Christian Karabetsos buried a header off a corner from Peter Cirbo, then doubled the lead in the 44th as Gio Diaz finished a setup from Finn Gruver just before halftime.

The Pioneers (4–7–5, 3–2–2 MWC) generated chances after the break but couldn’t break through against a disciplined Lake Forest defense. Jack Pennachio and Zander Salva each put shots on frame, while Jack Alexander recorded one save in goal for Grinnell.

Lake Forest held a slim 7–5 advantage in total shots and trailed 7–3 in corner kicks, but the Foresters’ defense remained composed under pressure. Grinnell’s midfield pairing of Beacan Mottl and Emmett Krez helped control stretches of possession, while Demi Oni and Ian O’Loughlin pushed forward in the second half to create the team’s best looks at goal.

With the loss, Grinnell remains in contention for a postseason spot but faces a crucial final week of conference play. The Pioneers return home next Saturday to host Cornell College in their regular-season finale.
