MAHASKA COUNTY – Even though it seems spring has sprung, influenza or the flu is actively circulating throughout the state.

Mahaska County has recently seen an increase in positive cases of influenza, an upper respiratory infection that causes body aches and high fever. The flu vaccine is your best defense against the virus, and Mahaska Health Partnership is still offering vaccines to anyone who has not received one this flu season.

“Many people don’t think that influenza is still active once warmer weather starts,” MHP Public Health Coordinator Patty Malloy, RN, explained. “However, the spreading of the virus often peaks sometime in February. With this increase of cases in our region, it’s even more important now to get you and your family vaccinated; it can still protect against the spreading of the virus.”

Malloy stressed that the flu virus can spread quickly through public places like schools, daycares, workplaces and high-traffic public areas such as grocery stores. “The flu vaccine is still your best defense against the virus. However, some virus strains may only be partially covered in the vaccine, so it’s just as important to prevent the spread of illness by remembering the 3Cs. Cover your coughs and sneezes, clean your hands frequently and contain germs by staying home when ill.”

Anti-viral medications are an important second line of defense to treat influenza. According to the Iowa Department of Public Health, anti-viral medications, such as tamiflu, can reduce the duration and risk of serious illness and even death from influenza. However, these medications work best if started within 48 hours, or sooner, of the onset of symptoms.
