Effort brightens holidays for survivors of violence

OSKALOOSA – Crisis Intervention Services recently wrapped up a successful effort to brighten the holidays for its clients and shelter residents. Nearly 30 clients received gifts on Dec. 23, thanks to the generosity of donors in and beyond the 12-county region that CIS serves.

Gift cards for local stores were distributed to survivors of sexual assault or violent crimes served by SASS (Sexual Assault Support Services), a program of CIS. Additionally, gift cards, presents and quilts were delivered to residents of Safepoint, the CIS emergency shelter.

“It’s been a tough year for everyone, but especially for survivors of interpersonal violence,” explained Sondra Prochaska, executive director of CIS. “Survivors and their families are struggling more financially, and thanks to generous community donors the agency was able to provide the welcome change of comfort and joy.”

The gift cards provided added blessings of safety and empowerment, Prochaska said.

“The cards not only lessened the risk of COVID 19 transmission during these times of pandemic, but they also provided survivors with the ability to select special gifts for their loved ones,” she said.

Support for the effort came from around and beyond the region CIS serves. Several new supporters donated online or mailed checks. St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oskaloosa continued its longstanding support, joined by St. Anthony’s in Knoxville. Mahaska Drug again provided sacks full of gifts for Safepoint residents along with Christmas meals for the families. Rhonda Nelson and the Quilt with Us quilting group of Albia provided quilts, pillows, and hygiene products, while the Rolling Hills Coalition also shared essential needs items.
