Dutch volleyball team taken down on the road
WAVERLY — The Central College volleyball team struggled to generate offense in a straight-set loss to Wartburg College Saturday afternoon.
The Dutch (10-10, 1-3 conference) were swept by the Knight (10-8, 3-1 conference) 25-19, 25-19, 25-14.
“We battled pretty hard for a set and a half,” coach Jeanne Czipri said. “We were point-for-point with them for most of the first two sets.
“Unfortunately, we stopped fighting as a unit let them get too comfortable behind the service line.” We have to get mentally tougher in serve receive and find a way to win that first touch battle.”
Outside hitter Ruth Hruska-Kelly (freshman, Brookfield, Ill., Riverside-Brookfield HS) had a team-high eight kills on 20 attempts. It was a career-high for the rookie.
“We were really happy with how Ruth competed today,” Czipri said. “She found ways to score.”
Krissa Larson (freshman, outside hitter, Waverly, Waverly-Shell Rock HS) and Melissa Miller (senior, right-side hitter, Williamsburg) each had seven kills.
Slotted at libero, sophomore DaLana Kron (West Branch) had 15 digs. Freshman outside hitter Landry Luhring (Grundy Center) also had 13.
Central’s setter duo of senior Chapel Carter (Colorado Springs, Colo., Coronado HS) and freshman Alyssa Lewton (Ankeny, Centennial HS) had 18 and 12 assists, respectively.
A tough stretch of American Rivers Conference road matches continues on Tuesday with a trip to Luther College on Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. match.
