Dutch men’s basketball team loses in waning seconds

INDIANOLA — The Central College men’s basketball team held a one-point lead in the final seconds but gave up a game-winning shot to lose 64-63 to Simpson College Wednesday night.
Central (9-7 overall, 3-4 Iowa Conference) had a chance to win but a last-second contested layup from junior guard Trashawn Boyd (Normal, Ill., University HS) slid off the rim.
“Very disappointing loss tonight,” said coach Craig Douma.
The Dutch were led by senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) with 13 points and nine rebounds, junior forward Kyle Smith (Ionia, New Hampton HS) had 12 points, Boyd added 10 points, five assists and four rebounds and senior forward Ryan Kunkel (Solon) added nine points and five rebounds.
Central won the rebound battle 41-31 and outshot Simpson 47.1 percent to 33.3 but the Dutch were turned over 20 times. The Storm made 15-of-19 free throws, while the Dutch converted 7-of-10 from the charity stripe.
“We lost the 50-50 balls tonight,” said Douma. “We lost the game because of turnovers and giving up nine offensive rebounds. I thought we outplayed Simpson but didn’t execute down the stretch.”
Junior guard Nick Drucker (Grimes, Dallas Center-Grimes HS) gave a spark off the bench for the Dutch with seven points and six rebounds in the loss.
The Dutch return to action Monday night for a rescheduled matchup with Nebraska Wesleyan at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium with the men beginning at 7 p.m. The January 16 contest was postponed due to weather conditions. Nebraska Wesleyan (10-5 overall, 4-3 conference) is coming off a home 92-89 loss to Loras Wednesday night. The Prairie Wolves host Wartburg College on Saturday.
