Dorothy June Marshall, 91, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday, March 21, 2023, at the MHP Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa, Iowa. She was born June 9, 1931, at her parent’s home on a farm outside Tracy, Iowa, the daughter of Steven and Elizabeth (Blom) Arkema.
Dorothy attended Tracy High School and graduated with the Class of 1948. On December 27, 1950, she was united in marriage to David Marshall in Unionville, Missouri.
Dorothy worked for May’s Drug in Oskaloosa, The Tracy Elevator and the U.S. Post Office. She worked as the Postmaster in Tracy for over 28 years until her retirement in 1991. Many people who grew up in Tracy while she was postmaster have fond memories of her handing out candy to them as children when they came to the post office. She was a former member of the Christian Reformed Church in Tracy and a current member of the Good News Chapel in Oskaloosa.
Dorothy loved spending time with her family and hosted many gatherings with her extended family during the holiday season. Along with her husband, Dave, she loved attending all her grandchildren and great-grandchildren’s sporting and music activities.
Dorothy was an avid golfer and enjoyed playing golf in the Wednesday morning Swing Club at Edmundson Golf Course. She loved the game of golf and played nearly every day well into her late 80’s.
Dorothy enjoyed the many trips and vacations she took with her family. For many years, Dorothy was a part of the Tracy Friendship Club. In her last year, she lived at Homestead and loved socializing with her friends’ playing cards and Bingo.
Her family includes her son, Barry (& Jeanne) Marshall; her grandchildren: Alexis Shipman, Kyle Marshall, and Kayla Bucklin; and her great grandchildren, Marshall Seibert and Astrid Bucklin, all from Oskaloosa.
She was preceded in death by her husband, David; her parents; two brothers, Gerrit “Bud” Arkema and Steven “Nick” Arkema and a sister, Betty Marvelli.
A memorial service will be held Saturday, March 25, at 10:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Steve Howe officiating.
As was Dorothy’s wish her body has been cremated. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation will begin Friday, March 24, 2023, after 11 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the funeral chapel from 4-6 Friday evening to greet friends and relatives.
Memorials may be made to the family that will be used to promote youth golf.
