Doris Irene Heslinga, age 96, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, left this earth on Friday, October 16, 2020. She was born June 10, 1924, on the family farm near Indianapolis, Iowa.

Doris moved to Oskaloosa to attend high school and graduated in 1941. Following high school, Doris attended Simpson College. She later attended the University of Colorado and graduated with a degree in Education.

Doris started teaching in 1971 in Fremont, Iowa. After receiving her Master’s Degree, she went to work for Albia Schools as librarian until retiring in 1989.

Doris was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Oskaloosa, the League of Women Voters, D.A.R. and a Book Club. She enjoyed doing activities with her different groups, attending church, reading, and the mountains in Colorado. She was an avid walker and enjoyed the William Penn track where she walked regularly. She was a wonderful grandma.

Doris is survived by son, Mark Heslinga and wife Kathleen Casey of Salem, OR; daughter, Jane Heslinga of West Des Moines; grandson, Beau Heslinga of Brooklyn, N.Y.; and granddaughter, Anna Heslinga of Salem, Oregon.

Doris was preceded in death by her parents, Cecil and Ruby Hasty; sister, Berdine Petersen; cousin, Beryle Jean Duncan; aunt, Opal Reasoner; and many friends.

Doris will rest beside her parents in Indianapolis Cemetery west of What Cheer, Iowa.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, October 22, 2020 at 2:00 p.m. at the Indianapolis Cemetery near What Cheer, Iowa, with pastor Bob Elgin officiating.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event. Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa is in charge of arrangements.
