Doris Barnard, 95, of Oskaloosa died Thursday, October 27, 2022, at the Oskaloosa Care Center in Oskaloosa. She was born September 7, 1927, in Barnes City, Iowa, the daughter of William and Grace Kirby Hockey.
Doris attended school at Deep River High School.
On September 16, 1945, she was united in marriage to Charles “Rex” Barnard in Oskaloosa.
Doris worked as a cook at Cedar Schools and later at William Penn College. She worked at the Mahaska Book Store for 22 years. She also worked cleaning houses and hanging wallpaper for many people in the Cedar Community.
Doris was a member of the Cedar United Methodist Church.
Doris loved to sew, crochet, and quilt. She made many hand-quilted quilts and gave them away to family. Her homemade noodles, fried chicken, and ham balls were always family favorites. Doris delighted in her family and looked forward to spending time with them. She will be missed by all.
Doris is survived by her daughters and their husbands, Connie (& Don) Cummings of Pella and Shirley (& Greg) Freeman of Carthage, Missouri; four grandsons: Todd (& Teresa) Cummings, Steve Cummings, Chad (& Mindy Obrien) Freeman, and Matt (& Jessie) Freeman; Six great grandchildren: Sydney (& Alec Mathews) Cummings, Clayton Cummings, Coy Freeman, Gage Freeman, Cooper Freeman, and Colbie Freeman; a sister, Bonnie Hamre; sisters-in-law, Pat DeWitt and Elaine Barnard; and many nieces and nephews.
Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Rex; her parents; a sister, Janet Townsley; a brother, Billy Hockey; brothers-in-law: Joe Townsley, Gerald Hamre, Gerald Lane, Jay Barnard, Jack Barnard, Bill Barnard, Joe Barnard, Kenny DeWitt, and Warren Smith; sisters-in-law: Ruth Lane, Bonnie Smith, Alice Barnard, Lucille Barnard, Thelma Barnard, and Gini Barnard; nephews: Charles Townsley, Kirby Hockey, Rodney Barnard, and Mike DeWitt.
Funeral services will be held Monday, October 31, 2022, at 11:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Reverend Bud Lane officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Visitation with the family present will begin Monday at 9:00 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and continue until service time at 11:00 in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
