The William Penn University Digital Communication Program is reaching out to high school students interested in media through its second annual “Communication Visit Day” on Wednesday, February 12. Students from school districts including Oskaloosa, North Mahaska, Melcher-Dallas, and Sigourney will participate in hands-on workshops in TV, radio, and online media. Through the various workshops, students can get an idea of what it’s like to work and create in today’s digital storytelling careers.

The Digital Communication Program at William Penn University prepares students for multimedia careers in Public Relations, Journalism and TV Production. The program stresses how media changes with technology and how to use change as an advantage. The visit day participants will produce short television newscasts in Penn’s TV studios, work in Penn’s on-campus radio station, KIGC-FM, and will participate in social media using the program’s state-of-the-art media computer lab. All facilities are in the Musco Technology Center.

Deb VanEnglenhoven, publisher of the Oskaloosa Herald, will speak during the lunch hour about how media has changed and what job opportunities exist or are emerging in this exciting time. VanEnglenhoven has worked during a time of rapid change in journalism and media and brings a unique perspective to Iowa students thinking of careers in digital media communication.

The workshops and lunch are free. Students will get an opportunity to interact with current Digital Communication students, work with Penn communication professors and meet the team at the Communication Research Institute (CRI). CRI produces a weekly TV newscast covering the Mahaska Community.
