Derek Levi Garrett-Springer, 18, of Bussey, Iowa passed away Sunday evening, June 16th, 2013, at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines as a result of injuries sustained in an auto accident Tuesday, June 11.

Derek Levi Garrett was born April 13th, 1995, in Iowa City, Iowa to Sherri Garrett. Derek lived in Oskaloosa with his mother and grandparents until 2005, when his mother married Delbert Pettyjohn and the family moved to the Bussey area. Derek attended Twin Cedar School District. Derek would have been a senior at Twin Cedar High School this fall. He was a member of the National Honor Society, the Coal Creek Community Church and a past Cub Scout. He was very active in sports in high school. Derek excelled in basketball and he and his twin brother, Dylan, were known as the “T.C. Twin Towers” on the basketball team. Derek was also active in baseball, track, cross country and football. He loved hanging out with his brothers, friends, and cousins. Derek also enjoyed going paintballing, playing video games, riding his four-wheeler and watching horror movies.

His family includes his mother and step-father, Sherri and Delbert Pettyjohn of Bussey; his father, Gregory Springer of Oskaloosa; his twin brother, Dylan Springer and his brother, Brian Pettyjohn, both of Bussey; his maternal grandmother, Nancy Garrett of Oskaloosa and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
In addition to his grandfather (Poppy), Keith Garrett, Derek was preceded in death by an uncle, Kenny Garrett, and his paternal grandparents, George and Wilma Springer.

Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Thursday, June 20th, at the Central United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.
Memorial services for Derek will be held at 10:30 a.m., Friday, June 21st, 2013, at the Central United Methodist Church in Oskaloosa with Pastors Leo and Carol Freel of Attica, Iowa officiating.
A luncheon will follow.
Derek’s body has been cremated and burial of his ashes will be held privately at a later date.
A memorial has been established in his name and will be designated at a later time.
