Oskaloosa, Iowa – This past weekend Daily Youth Theatre’s Stage Academy performed to combined audiences of over 400 people. Family, friends and community members came out to see 43 area students perform their plays, Finding Nemo and Deja Clue.

These performances marked the end of Stage Academy’s Spring 2012 session, during which students met and rehearsed two or three days a week for six weeks. Stage Academy is an after-school program that teaches students about teamwork and acting, while helping to build self-confidence and creativity. Time spent at Stage Academy is made up of fun improvisation activities, acting exercises, technical stage education, entertaining games and play rehearsals.

Stage Academy will be offering one more session before the end of the school year, beginning on March 27. Stage Academy’s general session is open enrollment to students in grades 1 – 8, and meets on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school until 6:00 p.m. at the George Daily Auditorium. The directors get to know the students during the first week of the session, and then write a play specifically for them, tailored to fit their unique abilities and personalities.

In addition to the general session, Stage Academy will also be offering Act II, a branch of the after-school program that is for more advanced and experienced young actors who are ready to tackle more challenging material. Interested students in grades 1 – 8 have the opportunity to audition for a role in a previously selected play. Auditions for Act II will be held after school at the George Daily Auditorium on March 21 and 22, and rehearsals begin March 26.

Since June of 2010, Daily Youth Theatre has had a total enrollment of 650 students and has put on 30 productions. Children from New Sharon, Pella, Eddyville and Ottumwa, as well as the Daily’s local Oskaloosa, have participated.
