Dagrin Qualifies in Outdoor Opener
Des Moines–Loubert Dagrin (So., Miami, Fla., Sociology) locked in a spot at nationals as the William Penn track and field teams opened their outdoor season at the Grand View Classic Friday.
Dagrin won the 110-meter hurdles event with a time of 14.90 seconds. The time not only put him in first, but also qualifies him for the NAIA National Championship in May as he met the provisional standard. The sophomore also placed eighth in the 400-meter hurdles in 59.11 seconds.
The navy and gold claimed three others titles as well on the men’s side, including Jackson Coates (So., Aldie, Va., Engineering Technology) taking the long jump at 23-2.75. He nearly doubled his gold medal tally by placing second in the triple jump at 44-5.5.
Mofiyinfoluwa Alade (Sr., Hoffman Estates, Ill., Exercise Science) earned gold and bronze, winning the high jump at 6-4.75 and finishing third in the 110-meter hurdles in 15.79 seconds.
The 4×100-meter relay squad was first as well with a title-grabbing time of 42.07 seconds.
Justin Moeller (So., Keota, Iowa, Psychology) helped WPU go 1-2 in the long jump as he produced a silver at 22-7.75; he was also fifth in the triple jump at 43-0.25.
Zac Richardson-Jackson (Sr., Germantown, Md.) topped the sprinters by finishing third in the 200-meter dash in 22.48 seconds. Jaelen Love (Jr., Crown Point, Ind., Secondary Education) was right behind him in fourth place (22.65).
Jasper Stottlemyer (Jr., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Sociology) tallied the best throwing performance of the day, placing fifth in the shot put at 46-0. Jesse Birlson (Jr., Fairfield, Iowa, Sports Management) ended up ninth in the javelin (127-4), while Landon Hansen (Jr., Newton, Iowa) was 12th in the shot put (40-1.5).
William De Jesus (So., Homestead, Fla., Biology) also managed a top-half finish in the 5,000-meter run, taking 18th at 16:37.90.
Shaniah Newby (So., Twentynine Palms, Calif., Nursing) walked off an event champion to lead the women’s team as she out-sprinted the 100-meter dash field in 12.59 seconds.
Abigaille Batu-Tiako (So., Plattsburgh, N.Y.) was the Statesmen’s best jumper by placing second in the triple jump (34-6.25) and sixth in the long jump (17-2.75).
The 4×100-meter relay crew took third in 50.78 seconds, while Raven Williams (Jr., Las Vegas, Nev.) finished fifth in the 200 in 26.91 seconds.
Michaela Kmiec (So., Centerville, Texas, Exercise Science) recorded a pair of 12th-place finishes, doing so in both the 200 (28.11) and the 1,500-meter run (5:31.79).
Danisha Washington (Jr., Peoria, Ill.) also had a top-half effort as she was 14th in the 100 (13.39).
