Central women’s soccer team battles for a draw

PELLA- Despite putting eight shots on goal, the Central College women’s soccer team was unable to find the back of the net leading to a 0-0 draw against Luther College.

Central (8-5-1, 1-2-1 American Rivers) outshot the Norse 15-4, the squad also had a 6-2 advantage in corner kicks. Goalkeeper Zoey Sizemore (sophomore, Omaha, Neb., Mercy HS) saved the two shots she faced.

“Our team defense from our forwards to our midfielders was fantastic, and our backs did very well to only allow two shots on frame,” said coach Mike Kobylinski. “If we continue to defend like that, we will continue to be in every match we have. I believe we will break out again as we are averaging almost two goals a game and I am confident we will see that on Saturday.”

The Dutch had chance to score was in the 56th minute when Grace Coates (senior, Marion) drew a foul in the box leading to a penalty shot that was saved by the Luther (1-7-6, 1-2-2 American Rivers) goalkeeper.

“We have been training really well lately and I want to give credit to our leaders for work in that environment,” Kobylinski said. “Now we want to find opportunities to seize the momentum and help us in moments like today when we felt like we did enough to win.”

Coates, Kylie Bloomstrom (freshman, Forest Lake, Minn., Forest Lake Area HS), Alli Seegers (sophomore, Waverly, Waverly Shell-Rock) all had two shots on goal to lead the team.

“In my 14 years here, I have yet to see a statistical performance against Luther like we had today,” said Kobylinski. “(Luther) now has six draws showing they are a tough team to get a result against, but we wanted more from today.”

The Dutch return to the pitch Saturday when they travel to Wartburg College and play at 3 p.m.

“I love the demeanor of this team and our gameplan we had for Luther and our women did well to put themselves in the right places for moments,” Kobylinski said. “We are looking forward to Wartburg and finishing off the last two weeks to put us in the best position we can and that we have worked so hard this summer for.”
