LITTLE ROCK, ARK.—The Central College tennis teams overpowered East Texas Baptist University Monday as the men’s squad swept the Tigers 9-0 and the women won 8-1.

Three players scored two wins on the men’s side. Kyle Freischlag (sophomore, Downers Grove South, Ill.) had a perfect 6-0, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles after pairing with Josh Forst (freshman, Woodridge, Ill., Downers Grove South HS) for an 8-1 victory at No. 1 doubles. Tim Kahl (freshman, Grinnell) won at No. 2 doubles and No. 4 singles and Collin Schares (freshman, Johnston) claimed victory at No. 3 doubles and No. 2 singles.

“We were ready to go and excited to play,” coach Steve Tyler said. “We executed well and looked strong.”

The Dutch clinched the team win at No. 4 singles and played the reserves for the final two singles matches.

“It was nice to have that depth and be able to play everyone that traveled and to get everyone some varsity experience,” Tyler said.

It’s the second sweep of the spring season for Central, which improved to 6-4 overall (4-4 spring). The squad blanked Edgewood (Wis.) back in February.
For the women, senior Riley Taylor (Tama, South Tama HS) battled out a victory at No. 1 doubles, 6-4, 2-6, 10-2 and claimed an 8-4 No. 1 doubles win with Blake Taylor (sophomore, Tama, South Tama HS), who also won at No. 3 singles.

Sarah Montgomery (freshman, Bettendorf) and Jordan Langer (freshman, Verona, Wis.) teamed for victory at No. 2 doubles while also winning in singles play at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively. Ashlei Bos (freshman, Weatherby Lake, Mo., Park Hill HS) won at No. 2 singles and No. 3 doubles.

“It was a good win for a young team,” Tyler said. “Most of our doubles teams hadn’t played together before. It’s nice to start off the season on the right foot.”

Central meets Hendrix College (Ark.) Tuesday. The women are slated to begin at 4 p.m. and the men will begin at 6:30 p.m.
