LA CROSSE, WIS.—As conditions improved, so did the play of the Central College men’s golf team but that still resulted in a fifth-place finish at the eight-team Ronnie Eastman Invitational Tuesday.

The 36-hole tourney started Monday but the first round wasn’t completed until Tuesday morning due to rain.

Central carded a 318-310—628 while Winona State University (Minn.) took top honors at 304-299—603. American Rivers Conference rival Luther College was third at 313-302—615. The tournament was hosted by Viterbo University (Wis.).

“Obviously the conditions were really difficult yesterday with the wind and the rain,” coach Mel Blasi said. “Today was a good day but we just couldn’t put four scores together.”

Zach Hansen (senior, Nevada) and Nash Bucher (senior, Huxley, Ballard HS) tied for 13th individually. Hansen shot 81-75—156 while Bucher had Central’s best round Tuesday, finishing at 82-74—156. Trenton Sann (senior, Clarion, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows HS) shot 80-79—159, Nick Walker (junior, Naperville, Ill., Neuqua Valley HS) had 78-82—160 and Kobe Rhodes (junior, Glenwood) shot 79-82—161.

“It was good to see Nash get on track and Zach continues to be pretty steady for us,” Blasi said.

Central is off until the Morningside Mustang Invitational Oct. 15-16 at the Prairie Club in Valentine, Nebraska. It’s Central’s first appearance at the tourney.

“We’ve got some hard work to do, especially around the greens,” Blasi said. “We need to execute the shots that help you score. That’s the name of the game.”
