Central, Livingston win Scot-Fire crown
MONMOUTH, ILL.—Behind eight strokes, the Central College men’s golf team fired a season-low 282 to come away with the title at the Scot-Fire Invitational Saturday. Sophomore Justin Livingston (Winterset) took medalist honors.
Central was tied for fourth in the team standings after Friday’s shortened nine-hole round. But the Dutch carded a 2-under par 148-282—430 on the Gibson Woods Golf Course to surpass No. 10 Millikin Univ. (Ill.) by two strokes (140-292—432). Central’s second unit, the White squad, shot 310 to finish at 458.
“It was a good day for Dutch golf,” coach Chad Green said. “I’m ecstatic with a 282, coming back from eight strokes down and beating a nationally ranked team like Millikin. It a very nice win and shows what we’re capable of.”
Livingston carded a 1-under-par 70 for the crown at 34-70—104. Alex Huyser (senior, Sully, Lynnville-Sully HS) shot 38-70—108, Brent Messmore (junior, Hudson) and Jason Harvey (senior, Goldfield, Clarion-Goldfield HS) each had 38-71—109 and Drew Osier (sophomore, Austin, Minn.) had 38-75—113.
“Livingston did well, finishing 3-under-par,” Green said. “And I’m really happy having to throw out a 75 for the second straight week.”
For the White team, Brent Goodenow (junior, Johnston) shot 37-73—110, Travis Havens (junior, Belmond, Belmond-Klemme HS) had 36-75—111, Will Overlander (junior, Argyle, Texas) shot 38-76—114, Erik Grunder (sophomore, Wilton) had 37-86—123 and Ben Bohlender (senior, Indianola) shot 40-88—128.
Complete team and individual standings were not yet available.
“This is a big confidence boost going into the final rounds of the Iowa Conference tournament,” Green said. “We want to keep the momentum rolling to next weekend.”
Holding a 22-stroke lead, the Dutch complete the league tournament Friday and Saturday in Iowa City at the par-72 Finkbine Golf Course.
