Central baseball team takes two from Elms

Central College

FORT MEYERS, Fla. — Ryan Goetzinger (junior, Mason City) and Ryan Dusil (sophomore, Cedar Rapids, Kennedy HS) both threw complete games in a baseball doubleheader Saturday, as Central College took down Elms College (Mass.) 9-0 in the opener and scraped out a 4-2 win in the nightcap.

“They both competed really well on the mound,” said coach Adam Stevens. “Goetzinger was lights out.”

Goetzinger dominated in the opener. The junior threw a one-hitter, holding Elms (0-2) hitless for six and one-third of the seven-inning contest while notching eight strikeouts.

“He really competed well and showed some great things to look forward to,” said Stevens.

Offensively, the Dutch blasted an eight-run opening inning and added the final run in the sixth. Designated hitter Josh Stanton (senior, Homer Glen, Ill./ Lockport Township HS) was two-for-three while scoring one run and driving in two more. Center fielder Sam Stetzel (Perry) was two-for-three, with one run and one RBI.

In the second game, Dusil followed Goetzinger’s example, going all seven innings while giving up just two hits and zero earned runs.

Three Central errors accounted for the Blazers’ two scores.

“Defensively we weren’t quite as sharp as we have been, but we found a way to gut it out,” said Stevens. “It’s always good to win a close game.”

Left fielder Michael Jontz (West Des Moines, Valley HS) led the offensive effort, going three-for-four with two RBIs and one run. Second baseman Adam Ariola (sophomore, Bloomington, Ill./ Normal HS) was three-for-three and added another RBI.

Central (5-1) takes the field again Sunday, facing off against 4-0 Principia College (Ill.) at 3 p.m.
