Bettendorf–Jamal Boma (Sr., Des Moines, Iowa, Business Management and Physical Education) posted one of the best times in school history as the Statesmen cross country teams ran at the St. Ambrose Fighting Bee Invitational Saturday.

The WPU men were ninth out of 13 teams with 221 points, while Waldorf topped the standings with 70 points. The women finished 11th of 13 squads with 281 points; host St. Ambrose claimed the crown with 43 points.

Boma, who already posted the program’s eighth-best 8K time two weeks ago, tied the second-fastest time ever at 25:31. He won the 132-person race by 14 seconds.

The school record of 25:17, held by Ralph Longus in 1977, is the only performance better than Boma’s at WPU. The individual win is Boma’s second of the season.

Payton Busch (Sr., Centerville, Iowa, Secondary Education) was his team’s next-best runner, placing 38th with a time of 27:52. Zack Johnson (Jr., Decatur, Ill., Mechanical Engineering) also slipped under the 30-minute mark with a time of 29:32 (72nd).

Garrett Heckman (Jr., New Virginia, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) (81st, 30:11) and George Ball (Fr., Cambridge, England, Physical Education) (93rd, 30:52) also scored for the navy and gold.

Cameron Shade (Fr., Riverdale, Ga., Sociology), in 100th place at 31:11, and Terry Jackson (Fr., Houston, Alaska, Biology), in 105th place at 31:35, competed as well.

Stephanie Johnston of Concordia (Mich.) won the women’s 5K race at 18:07, while Guadalupe Gonzalez (Jr., Houston, Texas, Exercise Science) was 18th out of 123 competitors in a time of 20:44.

Deja Lewis (Sr., Spring, Texas, Psychology) crossed the line second for her squad in a time of 22:40 (66th place). Bree’Anna Lee (Fr., Broken Arrow, Okla., Biology) was in the top 100 as well (98th, 24:54).

Charlotte Hackett (So., Las Vegas, Nev., Psychology), in 101st at 25:11, and Arianna Davis (Jr., New Sharon, Iowa, Biology), in 104th at 25:25, scored for the Statesmen Saturday as well.

Next Up: William Penn takes a week off before traveling to Cedar Rapids on October 22 to compete in the NAIA Seminole Valley Stampede hosted by Mount Mercy.
