Big First Quarter Propels NM to Win

NEW SHARON – No. 9 North Mahaska used a powerful first quarter outscoring visiting HLV by 20 points en route to a 63-37 victory. Breckyn Schilling poured in 31 points including 24 in the first half to lead he attack.

HLV’s Ayla Hall, who finished with 15 points, scored the first basket for the Warriors in the first minute of the game to cut the NM lead to 4-2. It would be six minutes before Hall added free throws to make a 28-4 contest. Ema Roberts added a pair of baskets before the end of the first quarter.

Turnovers were the debilitating bane of the Warriors with 19 in the first half. Many of those allowed North Mahaska to add to their lead. The Warhawks dominated the boards with 41 to HLV’s 25.

Kayla Readshaw scored nine points, Libby Hargis had six and Regan Grewe added five. Schilling led the rebounding with 10 and Hargis grabbed nine. Schilling also had five steals and four assists. Aly Steil doled out five assists and grabbed four steals.

North Mahaska (13-2, 10-1) will play at Lynnville-Sully on Friday. The two teams are currently tied for the South Iowa Cedar League lead.
