Betty Schwartz, 93, of Ottumwa and formerly of rural Hedrick, died Wednesday, October 7, 2020, at the Good Samaritan Center in Ottumwa. She was born September 21, 1927, in Mahaska County, the daughter of John Lewis and Hazel Violet Silvers Hensyel.
Betty attended country school in Mahaska County. Following school, she worked at Kresge’s in Ottumwa.
On July 28, 1946, she was united in marriage to Dale Schwartz in Fremont, Iowa. To this union four boys were born, Mitchel, Richard, Terry, and William.
Betty and Dale farmed in the Hedrick area for the majority of their married life. Betty not only helped Dale on the farm but also kept her home and four sons in order. Dale will remember her as the “Perfect Wife”.
Betty was an active member of the Christian Union Chapel Church. She enjoyed helping with Vacation Bible School, teaching Sunday School, and playing the accordion for church service. Her love and service to the Lord did not stop at church, she and Dale were always willing to support various missions throughout the world. She was a talented quilter and seamstress and used her talents to support many ministries. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and reading Christian Fiction books. She and Dale’s faith in God was at the center of their home.
Her family includes her husband of over 74 years, Dale Schwartz of Ottumwa; four sons and their wives: Mitchel (& Laurel) Schwartz of Eagle, Idaho, Richard (& Gayla) Schwartz of Ames, Terry (& Katheen) Schwartz of Pueblo West, Colorado, and William (& Carolyn) Schwartz of Hedrick; fourteen grandchildren; thirty-three great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers: Raymond and Robert “Bob” Hensyel; and a sister, Norma Harsh.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 13, 2020, at 2:00 p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel in Fremont, Iowa, with Pastor Jeremy Skinner officiating.
Burial will be in the Brooks Cemetery near Hedrick. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
According to the rules put in place by the Iowa Department of Public Health, proper social distancing and reasonable personal protective equipment is advised for attending a religious public event.
The funeral will be live streamed at the Bates Funeral Home’s YouTube Channel for those wishing to support the family from a distance.
Visitation with the family present will be held on Tuesday from 12 noon until service time at 2 p.m. in the Fremont Funeral Chapel.
