Balanced scoring leads Dutch men’s basketball team over Dubuque

DUBUQUE — Five Central College men’s basketball players scored in double-digits in a 93-90 overtime win over the University of Dubuque Wednesday night.

Central (10-8 overall, 4-5 Iowa Conference) trailed the Spartans 42-35 at the half but the Dutch roared back with a 47-point second half to send the game into overtime.

Junior forward Kyle Smith (Ionia, New Hampton HS) led the Dutch with 21 points and five rebounds, junior guard Trashawn Boyd (Normal, Ill., University HS) had 19 points and four assists, senior forward Colby Taylor (Creston) added 18 points and grabbed seven boards, senior forward Austin Glawe (Aurelia, Sioux Central HS) had 14 points and corralled a career-high 17 rebounds and senior guard Pete Walker (Red Oak) had 12 points and tied his career-high with seven assists.

“We had a bunch of different guys step up and hit shots tonight,” said coach Craig Douma. “Austin played really well offensively and defensively.”

Dubuque (7-11 overall, 4-6 Iowa Conference) edged Central 45-44 in the rebound battle and outshot the Dutch 47.0 percent to 42.3 percent shooting from the field.

After losing four-of-the-last five games Central looked to get back on track according to Douma.

“We really needed a win tonight,” he said. “We were resilient tonight and it was a great team win.”

Central continues Iowa Conference play Saturday at P.H. Kuyper Gymnasium when Coe College comes to Pella for a women’s-men’s doubleheader with the men beginning at 4 p.m. The Kohawks won the first matchup with the Dutch 75-56 November 30. Coe (8-11 overall, 4-6 conference) enters the contest coming off an 68-60 road loss to Wartburg Wednesday. Coe has lost four straight Iowa Conference games.
