Brad Arterburn was sentenced to life in prison without parole Monday for the murder of his mother’s boyfriend.
In September, a jury found Arterburn guilty of using a medieval-style ax and a knife to kill Robert “Hank” Horovitz in 2011. The defense stated that at the time of the murder Arterburn was suffering from mental illness and was unable to fully understand the consequences of his actions. But the jury was not convinced; it took them less than a day to hand down the guilty verdict. Judge Lucy Gamon’s sentence also required Arterburn to pay $150,000 in damages to the Horovitz family.
After the ruling, Arterburn was transported to the Iowa Medical and Classification Center in Oakdale. He has 30 days to appeal his sentence.
