An Old Time Country Christmas Grows In Popularity

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The cold of winter has set in and some snow is forecast, helping everyone to feel more in the Christmas spirit.

At Nelson Pioneer Farm, northeast of Oskaloosa, the candles were lit and the peanut brittle was taking shape.

Pioneers, Daniel and Margaret Nelson, claimed and settled on the Mahaska county farm in 1843. The couple raised six children at the farm. In 1959, the grandchildren of Daniel and Margaret passed away and the farm became the home to the Mahaska county Historical Society.

Nelson Pioneer Farm Curator, Kelly Halbert, was hosting visitors in the Nelson’s home, where she took the opportunity to share the life and times of the farm’s original family.

The new hand blocked wallpaper added a new level of authenticity to the two-story brick home. That has served as the centerpiece for the museum and farm.

Halbert said she was “thrilled” with the turnout, “it’s great. I love seeing everybody”. The yearly tradition has been turning into one of the larger events the museum holds every year. Halbert said that the growth of the event hasn’t caught up with them mentally, “So, I’m not as prepared as I should be”. That continued growth and usage is a good problem to have, for a museum who has struggled at times to bring in new visitors to utilise the facilities. Halbert said that she starts preparing for the Christmas event once the museum closes for the season.
