Mahaska County, Iowa – An Oskaloosa man was killed in a single vehicle accident between Oskaloosa and New Sharon on Thursday afternoon.

According to a report by the Iowa State Patrol, Charles Ritter, 71, of Oskaloosa was northbound on Highway 63 at 160th Street when his 2004 Saturn Vue drifted onto the right shoulder. The report says Ritter overcorrected entering the west ditch sideways, rolling the car onto its side.

The call for help went out at 5:02 PM.

The report states that Ritter’s life was not saved by the use of his seat belt; a call to the Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office confirmed the report.

The accident remains under investigation by the Iowa State Patrol.

New Sharon Fire, Mahaska County Sheriff’s Office, New Sharon Police, Mahaska County Emergency Management and Mahaska County Dispatchers assisted the Iowa State Patrol.
