Delgado Leads Trio of All-Heart Honorees

Oskaloosa–Three William Penn baseball players picked up some nice postseason recognition Sunday as the all-Heart of America Athletic Conference teams were announced.

Jeysen Delgado (Sr., Harbor City, Calif., Kinesiology) was named to the league’s 17-player first team, while Anthony Aguila (Jr., Highland, Calif., Kinesiology) earned second-team laurels (also 17 players on that squad). Julian Villegas (Jr., Wilmington, Calif., Sociology) was one of 29 individuals to collect an honorable mention. The awards are the first for all three players.

The trio guided the Statesmen to a 19-28 overall record and an 8-22 mark in league action.

Delgado topped the navy and gold with a .393 batting average (59-for-150), posting 11 doubles, two triples, and seven home runs. He scored a team-high 53 times and managed 26 RBIs. The senior had a .633 slugging percentage and also stole 23 bases.

Delgado was the most difficult player in the Heart to keep off base, guiding all players with an on-base clip of .528 (28 walks, 16 hit-by-pitches). He also ranked third in stolen bases, fifth in both batting average and runs scored, and ninth in hits per game (1.26).

The senior owned a 14-game hitting streak during the spring.

Delgado was also named to the Heart’s Gold Glove Team. He did not commit a single error in 104 chances, including producing 102 putouts and two assists. In regards to pure percentages, he ranks as the Heart’s best fielder as no one had more chances without committing a mistake (next closest player had 77 chances).

Aguila’s season was highlighted by a power display as he hit .358 (49-for-137) with 16 doubles, two triples, and seven round-trippers. He drove in 37 runs, scored 27 runs himself, and also stole four bases. Aguila produced a .444 on-base clip that included 22 walks and one hit-by-pitch.

The junior’s .657 slugging percentage ranks seventh in the Heart. He is also third in total doubles, second in doubles per game (0.38), and seventh in total bases per contest (2.14).

The second baseman owned a seven-game hitting streak at one point this season.

Villegas ended the season hitting .317 (52-for-164) with 10 doubles and a triple. He had 36 RBIs and 30 runs scored in addition to a .390 slugging percentage and a .375 on-base mark (13 walks, four hit-by-pitches). The junior, who managed four steals, recorded a 14-game hitting streak at one point.

A very busy fielder at shortstop, Villegas was third in the Heart with 2.46 assists per game and seventh overall with 113 assists.

Matt Jarecki of Benedictine was tabbed as Heart Player of the Year, while Michael Lopez of Clarke took home Heart Pitcher of the Year honors. Clarke Head Coach Dan Spain was named the conference’s Coach of the Year by his peers.
