Central Student Gets Opportunity To Discuss A Shared Passion With Iowa Native Ashton Kutcher

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Who would have guessed that writing an essay at 1am would get you an opportunity to speak one-on-one with an Iowa standout. “I didn’t think anything would come of it,” says Hannah Hirl.

It was frustrating, as students from Oskaloosa High School started Tweeting out photos of the Hollywood stars being at George Daily Auditorium. Hirl had been an OHS student council member before graduation.

Hirl, now a Central College student, got that opportunity this week when she was chosen to participate in a Skype session with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis. Hirl was notified of her opportunity on the same day that Kutcher was in Oskaloosa.

Hirl won the online tutoring session with Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis through Chegg Tutors Master Sessions. “I couldn’t believe it. I was so shocked,” said Hirl.

Hirl says she’s the vice-president of Students Against Trafficking at Central, and she said that she was most interested in talking about Kutcher’s project, Thorn. Thorn is technology and partnerships that work together to help stop child exploitation and trafficking from predators on the internet.

Kutcher’s role in Thorn is something Hirl admires the Iowa native and actor for. “I think they [Kutcher and Kunis] are phenomenal actors. I think they are more than that, I just think they are really good people.”

Hirl is currently studying to be a mental health counselor at Central, and is interested in the rehabilitation that takes place for victims.

Hirl also had questions about being parents and also being actors in Hollywood.

“I used to just think of him as the funny guy, like in his movies or That 70’s Show,” said Hirl, who is interested to see how Kutcher makes that transition to such a serious role in real life. “I think he’s just so passionate about helping people, that he couldn’t not do anything about it.”

“Chegg, the Smarter Way to Student, recently announced the second annual Chegg Tutors Master Sessions campaign, where selected students have earned a unique one-on-one online master tutoring session with some of the world’s top influencers across multiple fields. Chegg Tutors Master Sessions is intended to raise awareness about how technology can bridge institutional gaps and make individualized learning more accessible and affordable for all students. Our celebrity partners share our passion for students, for education, for learning, and for mentoring, and they have chosen to use our platform to volunteer their time and help one well-deserving student,” said Caroline Gennero, Corporate Communications Manager for Chegg.

“To be awarded a Chegg Tutors Master Session, students submitted a maximum 300-word essay that is specific to what they hope to learn and gain from a master session. Hannah was chosen as the winner of the Ashton Kutcher and Mila Kunis master session, because of her moving essay. As the Vice President of her college’s Students Against Human Trafficking group, Hannah expressed an interest in learning about Ashton’s project, Thorn, an organization against the sexual exploitation of children,” added Gennero.
