Oskaloosa, IA – Oskaloosa High School Math teacher Beverly Jenkinson was looking for a practical alternative to the standard curriculum when it came to foundations of personal finance. She turned to local State Farm Agent Wyndell Campbell for his advice to see if there was anything that he could provide from his personal and business experience.

“When Mrs. Jenkinson contacted me,” said Campbell, “ I was excited to help in any way that I could. I have 10+ years in real estate and finance as well as over 4 years of running my own business. The world we live in now has changed significantly, not just in the last 50 years, but even within the last 5 years. Giving our kids the solid foundations they need to make smart financial decisions for the next 50 years of their lives starts right now while they are teenagers. What will start them out on the right foot as young adults will be paramount in helping them be successful for the rest of their lives. Our students are facing tremendous challenges when it comes to finances, they need the basic knowledge to help them be successful in today’s economy.”

What Jenkinson and Campbell found was a program through Dave Ramsey called Foundations in Personal Finance. With the new curriculum Jenkinson has a fresh perspective on current world financial trends. The new take on personal finance allows the students to focus on key areas such as budgeting with intent, investing and setting the foundation so that the students can build wealth as they grow.

With Campbell’s gift Mrs. Jenkinson was able to order the necessary pieces she needed to present the class during the first trimester of the 2015-16 school year. Jenkinson was also able to utilize community leaders such as Campbell to share specifics about practical integration of the lessons.

“I was able to show them the actual application of liability limits and comparing coverage’s as it pertains to their individual situation,” said Campbell, “It is one thing to read about it and complete an assignment, but for Mrs. Jenkinson to allow me to share with the students how the specifics of an insurance policy or decisions when making a purchase would directly influence their lives allows them to take the lesson from the textbook and apply it directly to their own situation.”

“Thanks to Wyndell we were able to receive all the necessary materials for the 16 students we had in the first trimester,” said Mrs. Jenkinson, “And we were fortunate to receive a grant for close to $6,000 so the classes next year will have full access to the digital versions as well as the workbooks.”
