Statesmen Roll Over Waldorf 6-1

Oskaloosa–A pair of goals from Angelo Kelly (Sr., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) helped the William Penn men’s soccer team storm past Waldorf 6-1 in non-conference play Wednesday.

The Statesmen (8-5-1), who ended their mini two-game losing streak, only outshot the Warriors (6-7) by a 19-12 margin, but were in control from the opening whistle.

Kelly scored at the 5:00 mark with the assist delivered from Bruno Vencovsky (Jr., Sao Paulo, Brazil, Mechanical Engineering).

The senior then pushed the lead to 2-0 midway through the period when he was fouled in the box and sent home a penalty kick attempt. He now has five goals on the season.

Sergio Carro (Sr., London, England, Communications), at 40:19, and Randolph Tamba (Jr., Firestone, Liberia, Information Technology), at 41:52, also put shots in the netting in the first period. Angus Dibley (Fr., Gymea Bay, Australia) assisted on the team’s third goal and Carro aided on the fourth.

Waldorf struck first in the second stanza, but could not draw any closer than three goals.

While Tamba moved his team-leading goal total to 11, he was unable get to a full dozen on Wednesday. The junior, like Kelly, earned a penalty kick via a Warrior foul, but his kick was blocked. Fortunately, Francis Koroma (Jr., Brooklyn Park, Minn., General Accounting) was Johnny-On-The-Spot to knock in the rebound ball for his first goal of the season.

Dibley got on the board in the final minute of regulation (Tamba assisted) to wrap up the competition.

Max Stamer (Fr., Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education) posted three saves while in goal for over 62 shutout minutes, while backup keeper Caleb Pipes-Goulsbra (So., Lincoln, England, Exercise Science) had two saves and permitted the lone WC score.

“This was a good performance against a strong Waldorf team,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We played some great soccer; it was very enjoyable to watch. We want to continue to improve the program and with eight wins we have already surpassed last year’s win total. We now take it game by game and keep moving forward.”

Next Up: William Penn travels to Marshall, Mo. Saturday to face #8 Missouri Valley in Heart of America Athletic Conference action at 8 p.m.
