Oskaloosa–The Statesmen volleyball team needed Tuesday’s win against Culver-Stockton to make up ground in the Heart of America Athletic Conference race, but could not pull out of the road victory in a 3-0 loss.

William Penn (5-17, 1-6 Heart) lost by scores of 9-25, 19-25, 11-25; the squad was outhit .374-.000.

Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) managed eight kills, while Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) and Natalie Sieck (Sr., Ankeny, Iowa, Sociology) added four winners each.

Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) assisted on 20 points and also had two blocks (one solo, one assist). Danielle Breeher (St. Louis, Mo., Biology) paced the defense with 21 digs.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Thursday to host Grace (Neb.) in non-conference play at 7 p.m.
