Sioux City–Courtesy of a late rally in the opener, the Statesmen baseball team was able to go 1-1 against a tough Morningside program Saturday.

William Penn (10-10) won the opener 4-2, but fell in the nightcap 3-2 (8 innings).

Robert Phiakeo (Jr., San Diego, Calif., Business Management) began the scoring with an RBI single in the third, but Morningside (18-6) answered with two in the fourth.

The visitors continued to trail by one tally until the sixth frame. William Vazquez (So., North Hollywood, Calif., General Accounting) then doubled home the tying run in the top half and one inning later the go-ahead and insurance runs were put on the board. Ryan Marshall (Sr., Quartz Hill, Calif., Sociology) highlighted the seventh-inning effort with a run-scoring single.

Paced by Cory DeRush (Sr., Grand Junction, Colo., Business Management) going 2-for-3, the navy and gold edged the home team 7-6 in hits.

Matt Vasquez (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Business Management) was strong in six innings on the mound, allowing just one earned run on six base knocks. He was able to move to 2-0 as Logan Overly (Jr., Oakley, Calif., Secondary Education) finished off the matchup by inducing a double play and flyout for his second save of 2015.

WPU managed only three hits in the nightcap and was down 2-0 entering the seventh and final inning of regulation. The Mustangs broke through against starter Juvenal Terrazas (Sr., Sylmar, Calif., Physical Education) with one run in the second and tacked on another in the fourth.

Fortunately, the Statesmen still had plenty in the tank late as DeRush singled in a pair of runs to force extra innings. The home squad had the final celebration, however, posting the game-winner in the bottom of the eighth against Overly.

No runs were earned on Terrazas’ watch in a four-hit, six-inning outing. He had three strikeouts with three walks. Overly did not have the same success in the second contest as he did in the first, being tagged with the loss (1-2) as he allowed one run (earned) on three hits in 1 2/3 innings.

Next Up: William Penn comes home next Wednesday for its home and Midwest Collegiate Conference openers, hosting Viterbo in a doubleheader beginning at 4 p.m.
