Oskaloosa, Iowa | Age 86

Cock Quang, 86, of Oskaloosa passed away Tuesday, March 10, 2015, at the Hospice of Pella Comfort House in Pella.
Cock Van Quang, son of Noi Van and Sevai Thi Quang, was born, February 17, 1929, in North Vietnam.

As a young man, he joined the French Army in North Vietnam in 1950. He married Maou Thi Ca in 1951 in Hanoi. As the communist gained control, Cock knew that he would need to take his family and move to Laos, so in 1954 he did just that. While in Laos, Cock joined the Laos Army, and after being wounded in the line of duty he got a job in maintenance at the U.S. Embassy. The family remained in Laos until 1975, when they were again forced by a communist invasion to flee, this time to Thailand. Cock and Maou and their eight children, ranging in age from 20 years to 10 months of age, remained as refugees in Thailand for five months before being sponsored by Raymond Walker of Rose Hill, IA to travel to the United States. October 21, 1975, the family arrived at the Walker farm in Rose Hill, making their home on the farm in a house belonging to the Walkers. Cock worked as a hired man for the Walkers. The family moved to Oskaloosa in 1976, and Cock later got a job with the Salvation Army. In 1983, he took a job with Jaarsma’s Bakery in Pella, where he worked for four years. In 1987, Cock and Maou moved to Florida where Cock was employed in leather processing. After the tragic death of their daughter, Pommy, in 1997, Cock and Maou returned to Iowa to help their son-in-law with the care of their grandson. Cock retired at that time.

Cock enjoyed gardening and he and Maou will be remembered for their beautiful vegetable and flower gardens on west Pella Avenue. He also enjoyed basket weaving, bicycling and spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Cock’s family includes his wife, Maou Quang of Oskaloosa; his sons and daughters-in-law: Vieng Van (& Pom) Quang of Oskaloosa, Sing Cavan of Muscatine, Phang (& Thanaporn) Quang of St. Petersburg, FL, Phing Quang of Oskaloosa, Khom Quang of Oskaloosa and La Quang of Des Moines; his daughter, Thing (& Nhuong) Nguyen of Pella; ten grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Ong Van Quang of North Vietnam.

In addition to his parents, Cock was preceded in death by a daughter, Pommy Rassasombath, a grandson, Gary Van Quang; three brothers; and a sister.

Funeral Services for Cock will be held at 1:30 p.m., Sunday, March 15, at Garland-Van Arkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapel with Sieng Van Quang officiating.
As was his wish, his body will be cremated following the service.
Burial of his ashes will be held at 11:30 a.m., Monday, March 16 in Old White Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
