Statesmen Top Field at Midland Classic

Norfolk, Neb.–The William Penn men’s bowling team brought home its first title of the year by winning the Midland Classic last Saturday and Sunday.

The Statesmen were first out of 13 teams with a final tally of 9,156 pins in six regular games and four sets of Baker games. Dale Boynton of Minnesota State led the individual standings with a 228.8 average (1,373 pins).

Jacques Kaune (So., Anchorage, Alaska, Business Management) was named to the all-tournament team, placing fifth with a 207.5 pin average over six games (1,245 total pins). His four varsity teammates also bowled in all six games as well.

Piet Schaeffer (Sr., Livingston, Scotland, General Mathematics) was next at 202.2, while Cameron Foster (Sr., West Jordan, Utah, Business Management) posted a 198.7 clip. Brandon Barboza (Jr., Brick, N.J., Sociology), with a 198.2 average, and Drew Balta (Sr., Walford, Iowa, Education), with a mark of 180.8, also contributed to the program’s crown.

The JV squad was also best in its six-team JV division, tallying 8,693 pins. Michael Applegate (So., Council Bluffs, Iowa, Undecided) guided the way with an average of 206.7 pins (1,240 total pins).

Lucas Perdieu (Fr., DeWitt, Iowa, Public Accounting), at 202.0, Ryan Howard (Fr., King, N.C., Music), at 196.6, and Ethan Noble (Sr., Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Business Management), at 186.0, started all six games as well.

Eric Smith (Sr., Glenwood, Iowa, Industrial Technology) bowled in four games with a 189.8 mark, while Kevin Wesely (So., Mount Pleasant, Iowa, Industrial Technology) tallied a 150 in his lone game. Connor Frederick (Jr., Ottumwa, Iowa, History/Government) also picked up 142 pins in his only action.

Next: William Penn takes a couple weeks off before traveling to Madison, Wis. to compete in the Warhawk Open on Saturday and Sunday, December 7 and 8.
