Lady Statesmen Rebound for 78-61 Win Over D-II SW Minnesota St.
Marshall, Minn.–Just 24 hours after getting beat by one NCAA Division II team, the Penn women’s basketball team took out its frustration on another one with an impressive 78-61 win over Southwest Minnesota State Tuesday.
The Lady Statesmen (3-3) led from tip to final buzzer to knock off a D-II program for the second year in a row, beating Upper Iowa 67-66 last season. Both SMSU (0-1) and Upper Iowa are from the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference as is Augustana, who Penn played last night. SMSU was 15-12 a year ago (9-11 NSIC).
The game was never really in question as the visitors rolled out to a double-digit lead with 6:32 still left in the first half. Penn owned a 39-24 advantage at intermission.
The Mustangs pulled to within seven at 42-35 with 16:07 still remaining, but the Lady Statesmen scored five unanswered, all by Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS), and the margin was never in single digits again.
Subbert led all scorers with 23 points on 9-of-20 shooting (5-of-5 FT). She also paced Penn with four assists and tied Sarah Martin (So., Anthem, Ariz., Boulder Creek HS) with four steals.
Carleigh Hobson (Sr., Lancaster, Calif., Antelope Valley CC) added 15 points off the bench, including knocking down four three-pointers, while Rachel Butler (Sr., Orange County, Calif., Cerritos CC) had a double-double (her second of the year) with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Martin narrowly missed the mark with nine points on a perfect 4-of-4 shooting and Ashton Perez (Sr., Wildomar, Calif., Riverside CC) added seven points in the win.
Penn won the shooting battle 45.9%-40.0% and limited SMSU to just 30.0% in the first stanza. The Lady Statesmen defense also forced 22 turnovers (Penn had 19), resulting in an 18-11 edge on points off mistakes.
While Penn shot well and played good defense, the NAIA program did its most damage on the glass, however, with a 45-30 edge, leading to a 14-2 margin in second-chance points.

Penn Knocks off Luther in Home Opener
Oskaloosa–Taylor Louie (Sr., West Covina, Calif., West Covina HS) and Joe Range (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) each recorded falls to lead the Statesmen grapplers to a 24-13 win over Luther in dual-meet action Tuesday.
Penn (1-0), who is receiving votes in the NAIA’s preseason poll, avenged last year’s 29-19 loss to the #14 nationally-ranked Norse of NCAA Division III.
Louie opened the home opener with a dominating performance at 125 pounds. Leading 10-1 in the second period, he turned Zach Elliott to his back and pinned him at the 3:57 mark.
Tyler Schneider (Fr., Belleville, Mich., Belleville HS) extended the advantage at 133 pounds, winning 7-5 in overtime. The freshman rallied with a third-period escape and then took Louis Mazetta to the mat in the extra period to claim the victory.
Penn lost at 141 pounds, but 149-pounder Jason Mozley (Fr., Arlington, Texas, Martin HS) got the margin back to nine with a 6-4 victory over Brent Blaser.
Eric Burgey (Fr., Easton, Pa., Easton HS) was the first of four wrestlers to move up a weight for strategic purposes and was successful in his transition to 157 pounds. The redshirt freshman battled through an injury and held off Calvin Canales 11-9.
Joe Range (Fr., Burlington, Burlington HS) owned a small advantage over Eric Moreno late in his 165-pound match, but outmuscled him in the waning seconds, earning the pin at 6:46.
The Statesmen came up short at 174 and 184 pounds before Matt Woollums (Sr., Chariton, Chariton HS) secured the team victory with a 5-3 win over Nick Pearch at 197 pounds. The heavyweight match went to Luther.
Next: Penn travels to Minneapolis, Minn. Saturday to compete in the Augsburg Invitational. Action begins at 9 a.m.
