William Penn Volleyball in action Wednesday night against Mount Mercy.

Oskaloosa–In a match that seemed destined to last all night, the Statesmen volleyball team could not pull it out for its two elder leaders, falling 3-1 to Midwest Collegiate Conference foe Mount Mercy on Senior Night Wednesday.

William Penn (15-29, 1-5 MCC) lost by scores of 22-25, 25-23, 27-29, 23-25. The tightly-contested matchup witnessed the Mustangs (9-24, 2-4 MCC) narrowly outhit their hosts .182-.168.

The loss drops WPU to sixth in the league and sets up a rematch with #3 Clarke Saturday in the MCC Tournament Quarterfinals in Dubuque. The squads met on October 22 with the Crusaders winning 3-1 in Oskaloosa.

The opening set was tight early with the sides tied at 12, but then Mount Mercy pulled away with eight of the next nine points. William Penn narrowed the deficit to one at 22-21, but could get no closer.

The home team was up the entire way in set #2 (tied twice), holding an advantage as large as eight points at 17-9 before holding on to tie up the match.

The navy and gold trailed at the start of the third set only to rally and take three-point leads on two occasions (10-7 and 13-10). The Statesmen actually served for the set at 24-23, but failed to close it out and fell behind 2-1.

A pair of four-point edges did not hold up in the fourth set, either, as Mount Mercy rallied to take the lead at 16-15, a lead it nearly again relinquished (one tie at 20-20) en route to the win.

Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) paced the WPU offense with 19 kills, while Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology), one of two seniors recognized before the match, also reached double figures with 14. Campos’ 19 kills were the most for any Statesmen hitter this fall.

Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education), the other Statesmen senior, managed seven winners, and Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) had six points to her credit.

Leyra Jusino (So., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) came off the bench to assist on 34 kills. Connors served up three aces, while Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) posted 24 digs.

Giger also had the best defensive outing with five blocks (one solo, four assists).
