Midwest Regional Babe Ruth Tourney Set To Kick Off

Teams lined up for their picnic supper at the Lacey Complex Wednesday evening. The 8 teams will be squaring off in the Midwest Plains Regional Senior Babe Ruth Tournament starting Thursday.

Teams lined up for their picnic supper at the Lacey Complex Wednesday evening. The 8 teams will be squaring off in the Midwest Plains Regional Senior Babe Ruth Tournament starting Thursday.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – The crack of a bat and the roar of a cheering crowd will once again fill the air at the Lacey Recreation Complex Charlie Kentfield Babe Ruth field on Thursday.

The Midwest Plains Regional Tournament for Senior Babe Ruth has 8 different teams, from 7 different states, squaring off in a double elimination tournament.

Matt Saville, Vice-President of the Oskaloosa Babe Ruth and coach of Oskaloosa Senior Babe Ruth Team, addressed the gathered teams as they got ready to share in a picnic supper. The supper featured grilled burgers and hot dogs from the Mahaska County Cattlemen Association, and served up by a large group of volunteers.

On Thursday morning the tournament begins at 10:30 a.m.,with four games scheduled each day. Oskaloosa plays in the last game of the evening, beginning at 7:30 pm. The other Iowa team is Ottumwa.

 Also on Thursday evening, there will be an opening ceremony that will feature a couple of local servicemen. The opening ceremony begins at 6:30 pm. Tyler Sirovy and George Toubekis will raise the flag over the stadium. Sirovy is a Purple Heart recipient after being injured by an IED in Afghanistan. Toubekis just recently returned home after serving a tour of duty in Afghanistan and earning a Bronze Star for his service.

It’s five dollars to enjoy a whole days worth of Babe Ruth action. You will get a wrist band and you can come and go as needed during the day.
