First-Team Laurel to Thomas, Golomski Tabbed as Newcomer of the Year
Oskaloosa–A pair of Lady Statesmen cagers lifted their young team to a strong finish this winter and they were rewarded for their efforts as the All-Midwest Collegiate Conference women’s basketball teams were announced by the league office today.
Orielle Thomas (So., Waynesville, Mo., Waynesville HS) was named to the MCC’s ten-player first team, while Katie Golomski (Fr., Milwaukee, Wis., Pius Xi HS) was one of 12 athletes that garnered honorable mentions.
Golomski was also selected as the MCC’s Newcomer of the Year. The NOY award is the first for the program since joining the league in 2001-2002.
Thomas, who was an honorable mention last year, headlined the navy and gold as William Penn finished 12-19 (9-9 MCC).
The sophomore averaged a double-double with 14.8 points and 10.7 rebounds. She also recorded 30 assists, 30 steals, and ten blocks.
Thomas posted 15 double-doubles and scored a career-high 34 points against St. Ambrose on December 10.
She was the top rebounder in the conference and ranked fourth in scoring, eighth in free-throw percentage (78.8%), and ninth in field-goal percentage (44.1%).
The moment she stepped on campus, Golomski was an immediate threat to score big points from the perimeter, averaging 11.5 points in her freshman campaign. She produced 3.8 rebounds per game in addition to 47 assists, 30 steals, and 14 blocks as well.
Back on January 21, Golomski tied the school single-game mark with eight trifectas.
The freshman was the league leader in three-pointers made (94, 3.03/game) and three-point percentage (41.6%), while also ranking tenth in minutes played (31.42).
Jennifer Jorgensen of Grand View was named MCC Player of the Year for the second year in a row, while Viking head man Garey Smith was picked as MCC Coach of the Year by his peers.
