OSKALOOSA- The Recreation Promotions and Fund Raising committee for Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation (MCRF) hosted their 2nd annual bowling tournament last Friday night which raised near $3,500 for the Lacey Recreation Complex. The committee has recommended using the funds to install softball and baseball batting cages as a safe way for coaches and pitchers to practice when the fields are full. The batting cages would be installed at the 5-plex ball fields as well as the new Babe Ruth ball fields. MCRF would also apply for a local grant to raise the remaining funds.

Over 100 players made up the teams while spectators rallied around their favorites. Thirteen lanes were filled with players and enthusiastic community members. Lane Sponsorships were given from HyVee, Kelderman Manufacturing, Bates and Garland-VanArkel-Langkamp Funeral Chapels, Osky foods, and Edward Jones (Alan Fender). The event was held from 9:00 pm to 11:00 pm.

A small silent auction with donations from Mahaska Drug, Pepsi, Pro baseball players Wes Helms and Mike Stanton, NFL players Tyler Sash and Maurice Morris, ISU Football Coach Paul Rhodes, Brown’s Shoes, Hy-Vee, Fareway, YMCA, Penn Central theater, Debbie’s Merle Norman, MCRF, Book Vault, Maidrite, Subway, Peppertree, Smokey Row, and Hunters, earned $974.00. Swim’s donated the traveling trophy that the promotions committee plans to use in future bowling tournaments.

“It was a fun evening and it was nice to see the community support for our local MCRF” stated Melody Kelderman, one of the players on the “TD & T” bowling team. “The community really comes out for this event and we are grateful for the volunteers that make it happen” said Sherry Vavra, executive Director of MCRF. “I can tell the participants are having a blast, as several of them told me so!” For more information or to put your name on the list to be contacted next year contact MCRF at 672- 2499.
